The miscarriage rates go up with use of alcohol and smoking, and will also increase incidence of cervical cancer and an ASCUS on a pap smear. Many pregnancies that end up in spontaneous abortion never develop to the point where there is a heartbeat detectable by an ultrasound. The chance of subsequent miscarriage is only about 2 percent.
